Hi, I just joined. I live in Louisiana...originally from Missouri, and I pretty much grew up outdoors.

I haven't had too many opportunities to get out and go camping since I moved down here to the Gulf 4 years ago (I know...so sad), for assorted different reasons not even worth listing, but suffice to say that I am now in a place where I have a little bit of extra time, expendable income, and a boyfriend who actually isn't afraid of bugs or the sun.

If you have any suggestions for cool camping and/or fishing spots along the Gulf Coast, or, even better, parks that have places to scuba/snorkel, PLEASE share!

x-posted to camping, camptexas

(EDIT: My boyfriend and I are planning to hit up Vortex Springs sometime this summer, so I've got that one already.) :)

San Felasco Hammock State Park

self-portrait in the San Felasco Hammock State Park

Today I went on a bike ride out to the San Felasco Hammock State Park which is slightly north-west of Gainesville, Florida, in Alachua County. I've been to the San Felasco Hammock State Park many times before, and it's really a pretty interesting place to go: the park is located on both sides of Millhopper Road though the northern portion is by far the larger. You can go hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding (if you bring your horse and its proof of a negative Coggin's test) there. To access the portion of the park where they bike and horseback trails are you must go to the town of Alachua and enter the park up there though—not from Millhopper Road.

here's some photos from my visit todayCollapse )

More of O'Leno State Park (Oct. 2006)
I'm very sorry to say that although we saw a mess of white-tailed deer (kudos to Matt for insisting we leave the trail constantly), I was not able to get any photos. Unlike my hero Drizzt, I'm no ranger and my thunderous footsteps scared them away. Under the cut, you will find the creatures I managed NOT to frighten. Again, this trip was made with my kids and a friend's family, and was copied and psted from my personal blog.Read more...Collapse )

O'Leno State Park in High Springs, FL
Well, then- here's my contribution as a new member. It seems a little overly chatty because I copied and pasted most of it straight out of my personal blog. O'Leno State Park is an interesting place because the Santa Fe River runs through it, and mysteriously dissappears underground for 3 miles before re-emerging. This was from the weekend of Oct. 12, 2006. No mosquitos, but plenty of chiggers! This trip was made with my son and daughter, (whose names crop up in the commentary).Read more...Collapse )

Amicalola Falls State Park, Georgia.
Yes, I know this isn't Florida, but it is a very pretty place. I'll be moving to Georgia in about 3 months, this place is 20 miles from where I'll be.Official Park website

Florida Tent Campsites?
I'm wondering if any of you have experience tent camping either Highlands Hammock park or Juniper Springs in Ocala. I'm planning a trip to one of the two for a group of us to go tent camping and are wondering which site numbers are best for that. Thanks!

Coral Castle
Coral Castle, located in Homestead Florida, was built by one man over a 28 year period - somehow he moved tons of coral rock all by himself with only primitive tools. It's an interesting place to see.

Historic Bok Sanctuary
Historic Bok Sanctuary, Lake Wales Florida.

This has become a annual visit for me, it's a very lovely place, the gardens have quite recovered from the three hurricanes in 2004, and the tree coverage is coming back as well.

Flamingo Gardens again
Another trip to Flamingo Gardens for Member's Day, got some good shots of the bobcat, the otters were hiding unfortunately, but a little green heron came out to pose so it was a nice trip...

Lion Country Safari
This trip was on President's Day, 02/20 - it was an absolutely gorgeous day - the lions are now fenced off from the cars which means no more crystal clear shots without chain link fence, so it goes. Unfortunately a lot of these shots are a bit blurrier than I normally keep, I really have to clean my windows.

Lowry Park Zoo
The Tampa zoo is another nice one - they seem to be catering to the amusement park crowd lately, they've got several rides at the zoo, but as far as exhibits, they're also pretty good. I'd rank them third behind Miami & Jacksonville for the exhibits and variety of animals. Their staff (the ones I've encountered the last couple visits) left a bit to be desired attitude wise, mostly the teens working there seemed to be oblivious to the term customer service, the older docents were nice though.
